About Video Compressor

A video compressor that runs in your browser, so the file stays on your device.

What it is

Video Compressor makes video files smaller. The free lane runs entirely in your browser: your video is decoded and re-encoded on your own device and is never uploaded. You can aim for a target size, such as under 20 MB for Discord or 25 MB for email, and the result is checked to come in under the number you chose.

When a file is too big for a browser, or you need an exact target size, the server lane does the encoding for you. That lane does upload the file, which is why it is separate and clearly labelled. The server lane is a paid-plan feature, used through the REST API; the free plan is the in-browser lane. Paid plans take files up to 4 GB. Current prices and limits are on the pricing page, which reads them from the same configuration the server enforces.

Who built it

Portrait of Mike Wiberg, who built Video Compressor

Mike Wiberg

Mike has spent twenty years starting and running his own businesses. Video Compressor is software that does one job well, prices it fairly, and treats your files as private by default: the free tool compresses video inside your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

Privacy

On the free lane your video never leaves your device. On the server lane the video is stored privately, reachable only through a signed link, and deleted automatically within 24 hours. The full detail, with the two lanes stated separately, is in the privacy policy.
